Wolfgang Adam Töpffer (Geneva, 1766 – Geneva, 1847) was a Swiss painter known for his landscapes and watercolors. He is remembered as an early landscape artist who anticipated what later became known as plein-air painting. He was also the father of the illustrator and cartoonist Rodolphe Töpffer, sometimes called the father of the comic book.

The son of a German tailor from Schweinfurt who settled in Geneva, he first trained as an engraver and studied at the Society of Arts there. With a scholarship from the Society, he went to Paris in 1786 and attended the École des Beaux-Arts, where he learned watercolor technique. When he returned to Geneva in 1789, the city was disturbed by the French Revolution, and he struggled to find steady work, earning a living by teaching drawing and taking occasional portrait commissions.

From 1792 he travelled with the painter Pierre-Louis de La Rive, which turned his attention to landscape. As the political situation calmed, his work began to sell, especially abroad. Empress Maria Feodorovna and the former empress Joséphine de Beauharnais bought some of his paintings, and in 1812 he received a gold medal at the Salon. During the last years of the French occupation he also worked as a caricaturist and political cartoonist, earning the nickname the Hogarth of Geneva.

His reputation today is closely tied to his son, but his watercolors and landscapes remain his main contribution.

Oil painting from 1814 depicting the Temptation of Saint Anthony, a recurring subject in religious art and widely painted in the West since the Middle Ages. Without further details on its commission or context, the best approach is to focus on the scene: the hermit beset by visions and temptations in the desert, a key figure of Christian tradition.
