Amelia Cary, Viscountess Falkland
1807–1858 · British aristocrat, illegitimate daughter of William IV
Amelia FitzClarence (London, 1807-1858) was a British aristocrat, the fifth illegitimate daughter of William IV and the actress Dorothea Jordan. The sources consulted do not connect her with painting, so her significance rests on her social position rather than on any artistic work.
She was born at Bushy House, in Teddington, into a large family with the surname FitzClarence. After her parents separated in 1811, she was left in the care of her mother, while her father, king from 1830, raised his children to the rank of younger children of a marquess. In 1830 she married Lucius Cary, tenth Viscount Falkland, with whom she had a son, and the couple lived at Rudby Hall, in North Yorkshire.
She died in London in 1858. Her name is mainly remembered in connection with the royal family and the court of William IV.
