Berndt Adolf Lindholm (1841-1914) was a Swedish-Finnish landscape painter from the Swedish-speaking community of Finland. He is usually associated with the Düsseldorf School, though his work also shows early Impressionist features. He specialised in coastal scenes, and his career reflects the move of Finnish painting from academic training towards direct contact with French art.

He trained in Porvoo with Johan Knutson and, from 1856 to 1861, at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Society in Turku, under Robert Wilhelm Ekman. From 1863 to 1865 he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and then spent a year with Hans Gude in Karlsruhe. His first solo exhibition, in Helsinki in 1870, was a success, and three years later he was invited to join the Imperial Academy of Arts. From 1873 to 1874 he lived in Paris, where Léon Bonnat was among his teachers, and he came under the influence of Charles-François Daubigny and the Barbizon school.

In 1877 he settled in Gothenburg, where he served as curator of the city's art collection from 1878 until 1900. He also taught at the Valand Academy and was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. His notable works include Vallinkoski Rapid (1872), Steamboat in the Ice (1875) and Shore Scene (1882). His paintings are held by the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Gothenburg Art Museum, among others.

This small oil on canvas, dated 1870, is titled Boats on the Shore. Its modest size of about 25 by 32 centimetres invites a close look at the calm scene, built around boats resting by the water's edge. Available records say little more about its commission or reception. It is held by the Finnish National Gallery.
