Claudio Coello (Madrid, 1642-1693) was a Spanish painter and one of the leading figures of the high Baroque in Madrid. Trained in the workshop of Francisco Rizi, he was appointed painter to King Charles II in 1683, a post that led to his most important work, The Adoration of the Holy Sacrament, in the sacristy of the Monastery of El Escorial. He is best known for large altarpieces designed to move and impress the viewer.
Born in Madrid and baptized in 1642, Coello was the son of a Portuguese bronze worker. He began drawing in Rizi's workshop, and his master soon persuaded his father to let him pursue painting. From Rizi he learned tempera, fresco and architectural perspective, and through Rizi's court connections he studied the royal collections, where he came into contact with Venetian and Flemish painting.
His earliest signed and dated work, Christ Child at the Door of the Temple (1660), copies a lost composition by Jacques Blanchard. In 1664 he painted The Triumph of Saint Augustine, now in the Prado, and Susanna and the Elders, in the Museo de Arte de Ponce. Both combine Rubens's colour, Titian's sensuality and Veronese's architectural grandeur. His works are marked by theatrical compositions, fluttering putti and deep perspective backgrounds.
His commission for the paintings of the Convent of San Plácido in Madrid brought him early recognition, and he produced them while still in his master's workshop. After Rizi's death, Coello became one of the most sought-after painters at court. His influence can be seen in late seventeenth-century Madrid painting, which carried on his taste for large formats and religious staging.

Religious painting by Claudio Coello, dated 1676. The Immaculate Conception was a widely treated subject in Spanish Golden Age art, with the Virgin as the central figure. The available information does not clarify the commission or the specific context of the work, so it is best read as an example of devotional painting from its period.

Portrait of Juan Francisco de la Cerda, VIII Duke of Medinaceli, painted by Claudio Coello in 1670 in oil on canvas. The available record identifies the sitter but says nothing about the commission, the composition or the work's later history. It is a modestly sized portrait that mainly documents the likeness of a Spanish nobleman of the seventeenth century and offers a view of the output of a leading Madrid painter of his day.

A work by Claudio Coello, dated 1664 and painted in oil on canvas. It belongs to religious painting and shows Saint Augustine of Hippo with the attributes that identify him: a pastoral staff and a sword, which point to his role as bishop and to the triumph of faith. The record offers no further details about its commission or context, so any reading of the scene should stay with its visible elements.

This painting by Claudio Coello, dated 1685 and executed in oil on canvas, depicts Saint Dominic of Guzmán within the genre of religious art. Its upright format and considerable size suggest an image meant to be viewed closely and attentively. No further details about its commission or reception are recorded, so the description remains limited to the work as it is held in the Museo del Prado.

A large-format oil on canvas by Claudio Coello dated 1687. According to the record, it depicts Charles II of Spain, who appears within the scene. Given its size and religious subject, it was probably intended for a place of worship, although the available information does not clarify the commission or its original location. It is now kept at the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

Portrait of Mariana of Austria, second wife of Charles II and Queen of Spain, painted by Claudio Coello in 1688. The work is a small-format oil on canvas showing the sovereign in a formal manner typical of court portraiture. Without further documentation on its commission or history, it is best to restrict remarks to what the painting itself shows: the figure of the queen and the official character of her presentation.
