Daniel Garbade
1957– · Swiss painter, photographer and illustrator based in Spain
Daniel Garbade Lachenal (Zurich, 1957) is a Swiss painter, photographer, illustrator and set designer, long associated with Spain. His work, with post-expressionist traits, is marked by autobiographical touches of humour and by a drawing style the artist himself describes as 'doodling'.
He settled in Madrid in 1983, where he helped promote cultural ties between Switzerland and Spain. After a period in Zurich, he returned to Madrid in 2017 and obtained Spanish citizenship in 2023. He has Spanish and Cuban ancestry, and his works have been shown in Spain, Switzerland, Cuba, Mexico and Peru.
His portraits of public figures, such as King Juan Carlos and Pedro Almodóvar, are especially well known. An active defender of gay rights, he has addressed this subject in his art and in publications. His work is held in public collections, including the Musée de la Ville de Genève and the Museo de la Hermandad in Toledo, and he has continued to exhibit in Toledo, Madrid and Geneva in recent years.
