Ernst Anders
1845–1911 · German painter of genre scenes and portraits
Ernst Anders (Magdeburg, 26 March 1845 – Mölln, 1911) was a German painter best known for genre scenes, although he earned his living mainly from portraits, including many of his fellow artists. His career followed the usual path of a nineteenth-century German painter, combining private tuition with academic training.
He began as a private pupil of Andreas Müller. In 1863 he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under Rudolf Wiegmann, Heinrich Mücke, Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Julius Roeting. From 1868 to 1872 he was a private student of Wilhelm Sohn, completing his training with him.
His genre paintings form the most familiar part of his output, while portraiture provided his income. He died in 1911 in Mölln.
