Gu An
1289–http · Chinese Yuan dynasty painter, specialist in bamboo
Gu An (顾安, c. 1289 – after 1365) was a Chinese painter of the Yuan dynasty, born in Huaidong, in the area of present-day Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. His style name was Dingzhi, and he used the pseudonym Yuna Jushi. He is best remembered for his skill in painting bamboo, especially bamboo swaying in the breeze.
Reliable details about his life are scarce, and his death can only be placed approximately, sometime after 1365. His reputation rests on the paintings attributed to him, centred on bamboo, a subject prized in the Chinese literati tradition for what it expresses of flexibility and restraint.
His significance lies in giving the depiction of moving bamboo a distinct place within Yuan painting. Although the available sources do not detail his legacy precisely, his name is associated with that bamboo tradition, which continued in later periods.
