Gust Graas (Esch-sur-Alzette, 1924 – 2020) was a Luxembourgish abstract painter, also known for his decisive role in the Luxembourg-based radio and television group RTL. His painting developed alongside a long business career, and the two strands are closely intertwined in his biography.
As a teenager he belonged to the Hitler Youth and, during the German occupation, was forced to join the Wehrmacht, from which he managed to desert. After the liberation he studied law at Louvain and Paris, where he met several Impressionist painters of the Paris School and kept in contact with them.
In 1970 he was awarded the Prix Grand-Duc Adolphe. After retiring in 1989 he settled in Pollença, on the Spanish island of Majorca, where he continued to paint. His exhibition Mis años en España (1989-2003) shows how the sun and colours of the island shaped his work. In his own words, his paintings fully express his feelings about life and about life after death.
