Guy Krohg
1917–2002 · Norwegian painter, illustrator and stage designer
Guy Krohg (Guy Vidil Krohg) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator and stage designer, born in Kristiania (now Oslo) on 27 July 1917 and died on 19 October 2002. He came from a family of artists: he was the son of the Norwegian painter Per Krohg and the French model Cécile Marie Vidil, known as Lucy Krohg, and the paternal grandson of Christian Krohg and Oda Krohg, central figures in Norwegian painting of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
His work spanned painting, illustration and stage design. He worked for several Oslo theatres, including Oslo Nye Teater, Studioteatret, Det Norske Teatret and Nationaltheatret. His painting Vintersol, from 1954, is held by the National Gallery of Norway, a sign of the recognition of his painting in his home country.
In his personal life he married Lilian Smith in 1940 and, from 1949, the actress Sossen Krohg. In 1995 he published a biography of his father, Per Krohg, which adds to the record of that generation of artists.
