Hamlet Zinkivskyi, also known as Gamlet, is a contemporary Ukrainian artist, street muralist and photographer born in Kharkiv in 1986. He is one of the best-known names in Ukrainian street art. His monochrome murals pair minimalist drawings with short philosophical texts, and many of them have become landmarks of Kharkiv's urban landscape.
He studied at the Kharkiv Art College and then in the Department of Monumental Painting at the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, although he did not complete his degree. From the 2000s he built a practice centred on public space, with hundreds of pieces spread across residential neighbourhoods and industrial districts. He exhibited at museums and galleries abroad and was twice nominated for the PinchukArtCentre Prize, in 2009 and 2011. In 2013 he represented Ukraine at the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, presenting the projects In Solitude and The Book of People, an installation of hundreds of portraits made in matchboxes. He also illustrated books, including Antenna by Serhiy Zhadan.
After Russia's invasion he stayed in Kharkiv despite the shelling, painting on damaged buildings, boarded-up walls and bomb sites and documenting the war through public installations that drew the attention of international media. His work is closely tied to Kharkiv's cultural identity and combines street art, conceptual art, literature and documentary observation.
