Hans Henrik Reusch
1852–1922 · Norwegian geologist and geomorphologist
Hans Henrik Reusch (Bergen, 1852 – Hvalstad, 1922) was a Norwegian geologist, geomorphologist and educator. He was not a painter, but he was married to the painter Helga Marie Ring Reusch, which is why his name appears in this encyclopedia.
He studied at Leipzig and Heidelberg and took his doctorate at the University of Christiania in 1883. He joined the Geological Survey of Norway in 1875 and directed it from 1888 to 1921. He is best known for his research on the crystalline schists and Palaeozoic rocks of Norway, and for calling attention in 1891 to the so-called "Reusch's Moraine", a Precambrian glacial conglomerate in the Varanger Fjord, a view A. Strahan confirmed in 1896.
In 1877 he founded the popular science magazine Naturen and chaired the Norwegian Geographical Society on two occasions. He also held the Sturgis Hooper professorship of geology at Harvard in 1897–98. He died at Hvalstad Station while trying to board a train. His private library reached about 12,000 volumes, and the Norwegian Geological Society awards the Reusch Medal in his memory.
