1936– · Dutch-Israeli painter and textile designer
Helen Berman (born Amsterdam, 6 April 1936) is a Dutch-Israeli visual artist, well known in Israel and also exhibited in Germany and the Netherlands. She began her career as a textile designer before devoting herself mainly to painting, and her work mixes realistic impressionism with lyrical abstract expressionism.
Born in Amsterdam, she survived the Holocaust as a young girl. She trained as a textile designer at the Design Academy Eindhoven, graduating in 1960, and then designed fabrics for several companies; some of her designs won prizes and appeared in professional magazines. In the seventies she studied painting and drawing with Thierry Veltman and earned a teaching degree. In 1978 she emigrated to Israel, spent a decade in Jaffa, became part of the local artists' community and joined the Israel Painters and Sculptors Association. Since 1998 she has painted and exhibited from her studio in Tel Mond.
