Jan Baptist van der Hulst
1790–1862 · Flemish painter and lithographer
Jan Baptist van der Hulst (2 March 1790 – 16 May 1862) was a Flemish painter and lithographer of the nineteenth century. He is best known for portraits of members of the royal family of the Netherlands, although he also worked in history painting.
Among his most cited portraits are those of William I (1830) and William II (1833), as well as the portrait of Wilhelmine of Prussia (1833). For the court he also painted Anna Pavlovna (1837), and a portrait of the four-year-old Alexine Tinne, dated 1839, is attributed to him. These works show a portraitist's practice aimed at the elite of his time.
Alongside painting, he practised lithography, a technique that allowed him to circulate images and that rounds out the profile of an artist working within the graphic production of his era. His legacy is associated with the official representation of the Dutch monarchy during the first half of the nineteenth century.
