John Glithero, better known as John Goto, was a British photographic artist who died on 2 August 2023, aged 74. Born in Stockport on 11 February 1949, he made work that addresses historical, cultural and socio-political subjects, often with a satirical approach.
He took the name John Goto from Walerian Borowczyk's first feature film, Goto, Island of Love (1968). His first solo exhibition, Goto, Photographs 1971-81, was held at The Photographer's Gallery in London in 1981. Later solo shows included Terezin at the Raab Gallery in Berlin (1988), The Scar at Manchester City Museum and Art Gallery (1993) and Loss of Face at Tate Britain (2002). From 1988 to 1989 he was Artist-in-Residence at Kettle's Yard, University of Cambridge.
His books include Ukadia, published to accompany a 2003 exhibition at the Djanogly Art Gallery in Nottingham, and Lovers Rock, a 1977 series of portraits of young British Afro-Caribbeans. In 2007 the Telegraph named him among the top 100 living geniuses.
