John Stezaker (born 1949, Worcester) is a British conceptual artist whose work is built through collage and the appropriation of existing images. He trained at the Slade School of Art in London, graduating in 1973, and he was among the first wave of British conceptual artists to push back against the dominance of Pop art.
He gave up painting for film during his first year at the Slade, and photography and cinema shaped his later practice. His collages draw on postcards, film stills and publicity photographs. In the Masks series he laid Victorian postcards over film stars of the 1940s and 1950s; in Marriage he combined male and female screen faces. His ideal, he has said, is to change an image as little as possible.
For years his work received little recognition, until the art market rediscovered it in the mid-2000s. In 2012 he won the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. He is regarded as an influence on the Young British Artists. He works from his studio in St Leonards-on-Sea.
