Knox
1945– · British painter, punk portraitist and guitarist with The Vibrators
Ian Milroy Carnochan, known as Knox, was born in London in 1945. He is best remembered as a guitarist and founding member of the British punk band The Vibrators, but he has also built a body of work as a painter that deserves separate attention.
His interest in painting took hold during his years at art school in Watford and in the West of England, while his musical development was put on hold. After returning to music in 1972, he kept painting, drawing on both the old masters and contemporary artists such as Salvador Dalí, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton.
His subjects include portraits of punk icons, among them Joe Strummer, Joey Ramone and Leatherface, as well as landscapes and buildings. Around eighty of his paintings can be viewed online.
Today he runs Rock 'N' Roll Rescue, a music memorabilia shop in Camden next to the Dublin Castle, and the cash it raises goes to local charities.
