Liu Fangping was a Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty, born around 742 in Luoyang and believed to have died around 779. The dates of his life are not precisely established, so they should be taken as approximate. Twenty-six of his poems survive, and two of them, "Moonlit Night" (月夜) and "Spring Grief" (春怨), are the best known.
His work belongs to the poetry of the Tang period, one of the most important eras of Chinese literature. His surviving output is small, but it has reached the present and is studied within that context.
His reputation owes much to the "Three Hundred Tang Poems", an anthology first compiled around 1763 by the Qing scholar Sun Zhu (1722–1778), also known as Hengtang Tuishi. The inclusion of two of Liu Fangping's poems in such a popular and best-selling collection shows how well known he was.
