Marcel Denis
1923–2002 · Belgian comics creator working in French
Marcel Denis (Monceau-sur-Sambre, 1923 – Lobbes, 2002) was a Belgian comics author writing in French. He created the series Hultrasson and Les Frères Clips for the magazine Spirou, and is considered part of the Marcinelle School, influenced by Jijé and André Franquin.
He made his debut at 17, in 1940, in Le Petit Vingtième with the scouting story Pip. After the war he combined office work with illustration for Belgian newspapers and magazines. In 1952 he joined Dupuis as a letterer, and in 1957 he spent a short time at the studio André Franquin had opened in Brussels. That same year he published stories for Spirou, and in 1960 he drew two episodes of Tif et Tondu, neither of which was published as an album at the time.
His best-known work is Hultrasson, a series he wrote and drew with Marcel Remacle about a Viking beer salesman. Denis left comics in 1971 for a job at a printer and returned to painting late in life.}
