Marie van Regteren Altena
1868–1958 · Dutch still life painter
Maria Engelina van Regteren Altena, known as Marie van Regteren Altena (Amsterdam, 1868 – Amsterdam, 1958), was a Dutch painter best known for her still lifes. Her work belongs to the artistic milieu of Amsterdam between the late nineteenth and the mid-twentieth century, and it offers a view of a generation of women painters who combined their training with an active place in the city's art world.
She trained at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, and studied with Geo Poggenbeek and Gerard Overman. She belonged to the Amsterdamse Joffers, and was also a member of the Vereeniging Sint Lucas Amsterdam and the Arti et Amicitiae society. Her painting was shaped by French artists such as Chardin, Cézanne, Degas and Manet.
Her work was included in the 1939 exhibition and sale Onze Kunst van Heden (Our Art of Today) at the Rijksmuseum. Today her paintings are held in the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, which keep her legacy.
