Mario Berrino
1920–2011 · Italian painter, photographer and designer associated with the avant-garde
Mario Berrino (Alassio, 1920 – Alassio, 2011) was an Italian painter, photographer and designer associated with the avant-garde. He was born and died in the same town on the western Ligurian coast, and his name is tied above all to the history of Alassio.
In the years after the First World War, Berrino worked alongside his father Angelo, a veteran of that conflict, and with his brothers Elio, Giorgio and Adriano at the Caffè Roma, a well-known establishment in the area. During Italy's great postwar recovery, the café became a meeting place for artists of national and international renown, among them Carlo Biotti and Ernest Hemingway, who became a close friend.
Berrino died on 3 August 2011, at the age of 90. He was the father of radio presenter Luisella Berrino.
