Marjorie Lee Eaton (Oakland, 1901 – Palo Alto, 1986) was an American painter, photographer and character actress. Her early paintings, modernist figure work with bold lines, strong colour and Cubist influence, were made in Taos, New Mexico, and in Mexico, where she worked alongside Diego Rivera. Her story is that of an artist who gave up painting because she found it impossible to earn a living as a woman, and who built a career on acting instead.
Eaton grew up in Palo Alto and trained in Boston, Florence and Paris. She took lessons from Hans Hofmann at the Art Students League of New York, where she met Louise Nevelson and later shared a studio with her. She was part of the Taos art colony from 1928 to 1932 and spent 1933 to 1935 in Mexico. In 1939 she built an adobe house near the historic Briones house in Palo Alto, working with architect Gregory Ain.
Her painting "Taos Ceremony" was shown in a 2008 retrospective on Colorado and the Old West. Unable to support herself as a painter, she turned to stage and screen. She made her uncredited film debut in Anna and the King of Siam (1946) and appeared in Mary Poppins (1964) and The Trouble with Angels (1966). In 1979 she filmed a scene for The Empire Strikes Back under heavy makeup, though she received no screen credit. She died in 1986 at her childhood home in Palo Alto, and her ashes were scattered between Palo Alto and Taos.
