Miguel Navarro Cañizares
1840–1913 · Spanish painter of the nineteenth century, active in Valencia, Caracas and Brazil
Miguel Navarro Cañizares was a Spanish painter, born in Valencia and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1913. He trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia and later in Madrid, at the San Fernando Academy and in the studio of Federico Madrazo.
He showed several works at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1860, 1862 and 1866. His Saint Catherine Carried by Angels earned a third-class medal and was bought by the government for the National Museum. After winning a competitive examination in 1864, he received a grant to study in Rome for about eight years.
In 1872 he reached Caracas, where he was commissioned to paint a large allegorical canvas on the Battle of San Fernando de Apure, which celebrated Antonio Guzmán Blanco. A plan to decorate the cathedral of Caracas came to nothing after the archbishop who backed it was exiled. The painting in the Senate was probably destroyed during the riots of 1889.
In 1876 he settled in Salvador de Bahia, where he taught at the Liceo de Artes e Ofícios and helped found an arts academy in 1877. In 1882 he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he lived until his death. Among his pupils was Antonio Herrera Toro.
