Pierre Frédéric de la Croix
1709–1782 · Pastel portraitist active in The Hague
Pierre Frédéric de la Croix (1709-1782) was an eighteenth-century painter working in the Dutch Republic, although he had been born in France. His significance lies mainly in his portraiture and in the family of artists he left behind.
He settled in The Hague, where he joined the Confrérie Pictura in 1753. He was deaf and mute, which did not prevent him from having several children. His daughter Susanna married the flower painter Jan van Os, and another child, known as J. de la Croix, also painted portraits. Both followed their father's manner, producing pastel portraits. Among Pierre Frédéric's works is the Portrait of Margaretha Vijgh (1756). He died in The Hague in 1782.
