Rosto (born Robert Stoces, 1969–2019) was a Dutch artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam, where he founded Studio Rosto A.D, a film production company, animation studio and atelier. He is best known for the Mind My Gap short film trilogy, a mixed media project that began as an online graphic novel and expanded into music and print.
His first shorts, Anglobilly Feverson (2002) and Jona/Tomberry (2005), toured international festivals, and the latter won the Grand Prix Canal+ at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. His most ambitious work was The Monster of Nix (2011), a 30-minute animated musical with a voice cast that included Terry Gilliam and Tom Waits. It took six years to produce and was released in cinemas in the Netherlands and Belgium.
His later work forms the Thee Wreckers tetralogy, whose final instalment, Reruns, was released in 2018. Lonely Bones won the grand prix at the 2013 Ottawa International Animation Festival. Rosto died in 2019. His legacy lies in blending animation, music and independent storytelling.
