Juan Pablo Escobar Henao
1977– · Colombian architect, industrial designer, writer and lecturer; pacifist
Sebastián Marroquín, born Juan Pablo Escobar Henao in Medellín in 1977, is a Colombian architect, industrial designer, writer and lecturer, best known for his public advocacy of peace and for his open distance from the legacy of his father, the drug lord Pablo Escobar. The sources consulted do not document any work as a painter.
As a child he lived at the Hacienda Nápoles and travelled with his family to the United States and other countries. From 1984, the conflict between the Medellín Cartel and the Colombian state shaped his life: raids on the family's homes forced them to keep a low profile. In January 1988, he and his family survived a car bomb at the Edificio Mónaco.
In 1993, while his father was in hiding, he tried to leave the country with part of the family, but immigration authorities held them at the airport, and, by his account, a group of his father's enemies was waiting outside. He then hired a private helicopter and returned to Medellín. Pablo Escobar was killed on 2 December 1993. Shortly afterwards, Juan Pablo stated that he would not avenge his father and that his priority was his family's future.
