Shmavon Shmavonyan (born February 22, 1953, in Verin Artashat, Ararat Province, Armenia) is an Armenian painter whose career has unfolded between Yerevan and abroad. According to the sources, he began painting at the age of seven in his native village.
From 1971 to 1975 he studied painting at the Terlemezian School of Arts in Yerevan. From the 1980s he exhibited in several cities in Russia, Turkey, France, Lebanon, England, Kuwait and the United States, including shows in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Istanbul, Beirut and Pasadena. His solo exhibition in Istanbul in 2013, titled "The Joy of Nature", is among the most frequently cited.
In the United States, where he is best known in California, he donated works to medical and civic institutions, such as the painting "Eternity", which he gave in 2003 to Glendale Memorial Hospital in memory of those lost on September 11, 2001. In 2012 he gave the canvas "The Song of Songs" to the Matenadaran in Yerevan, and in 2011 he received the honorary title of Meritorious Artist of the Republic of Armenia.
His legacy is linked above all to spreading Armenian art abroad and to his public donations. His work has also appeared in publications in Yerevan, where an album of his paintings from 1993 to 2013 was issued.
