Stanisław Dębicki
1866–1924 · Polish painter and illustrator
Stanisław Dębicki (Lubaczów, 1866 – Kraków, 1924) was a Polish painter and illustrator, trained at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Griepenkerl and later in Kraków, Munich and Paris. His work sits between academic traditions and the newer currents of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Central Europe.
After studying in Vienna from 1881 to 1884, he worked with Władysław Łuszczkiewicz at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, attended the Munich Academy from 1890 to 1891, and completed his training at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. He was a member of the Vienna Secession in 1897. His first post was teaching at the Ceramics Industry School in Kołomyja, followed by a job at a private drawing school in Lwów run by Marceli Harasimowicz.
In 1909 he returned to Kraków as an assistant at the Art Academy and, after the death of Stanisław Wyspiański, was promoted to professor. He also taught occasional classes at the School of Fine Arts for Women. In 1923 he became a full member of the Academy, and later that year, in poor health, he retired.
He often painted in the countryside, capturing scenes from the lives of the Hutsuls and Galician Jews. Although he worked in almost every artistic medium, he produced relatively few paintings and made little effort to exhibit or promote himself. His pupils included Hanna Rudzka-Cybisowa, Andrzej Pronaszko, Symche Trachter and Ludwik Konarzewski.
