Tomás Sánchez
1948– · Cuban painter and engraver known for landscapes
Tomás Sánchez Requeiro (born 1948 in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos, Cuba) is a Cuban painter and engraver known mainly for his landscapes. Raised in a middle-class family in central Cuba, he built his career in Havana, where he became one of the most recognized voices in contemporary Cuban painting.
At sixteen he moved to Havana to study at the National Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro. In 1967 he transferred to the newly founded National Art School, where he graduated in 1971 and won a drawing prize that same year at the National Exhibition for Young Artists. After graduating he taught engraving at the same school until 1976, and in 1975 he won painting and lithography prizes at a national salon for teachers of art.
Between 1976 and 1978 he worked as a stage and puppet designer for children's theatre at the Ministry of Culture, an experience that broadened his creative range. His international profile grew in 1980, when he won the Joan Miró international drawing prize for the work Desde las aguas blancas. The following year he exhibited at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. His work has been shown in more than thirty countries, and among his solo exhibitions the 1985 retrospective at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana stands out.
