Vittorio Avanzi
1850–1913 · Italian landscape painter
Vittorio Avanzi (born in Verona, 21 February 1850 – died in Campofontana, 7 August 1913) was an Italian painter best known for his landscapes. His work belongs to the Italian landscape tradition of the late nineteenth century, when direct observation of nature gained ground over studio-based painting.
Avanzi was born in Verona and trained at the Academy in Munich, in Bavaria, a centre that drew many Italian artists at the time. Some of his subjects date from this period, including views around Dachau, a Bavarian village, and scenes near the Isar river. He exhibited at the Venice exhibition in 1887, 1897 and 1899, which places him within the Italian art circuit of the era.
Among his paintings are Prima della pioggia, Le vicinanze di Dachau, Nelle vicinanze dell'Isaar, La marina di Capri and Le prime foglie. He died in Campofontana in 1913. His legacy is modest and survives mainly through these works and his participation in the Venice exhibitions, which situate his output within the Italian landscape painting of his day.
