Zak Smith (born Syracuse, New York, 1976) is an American painter known for a portrait style that blends influences from abstract painting and comic book art. He trained at Cooper Union, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and Yale University, where he earned his MFA in 2001.
His series Girls in the Naked Girl Business, which depicts strippers, has works in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum. His best-known piece is Pictures Showing What Happens on Each Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow, a multimedia composition of 760 drawings, photographs and paintings, one for each page of the novel's first printing. It was shown at the 2004 Whitney Biennial and is now owned by the Walker Art Center.
He has also written for role-playing games and worked as an adult film actor, activities that sit outside the core of his artistic career. In 2019 several women, including his former wife, accused him of sexual abuse; Smith denied the accusations and filed defamation lawsuits.
