The Sistine Chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, in Vatican City, and is part of the Vatican Museums. It began as the chapel of the Vatican fortress under the name Cappella Magna, and took its current name from Pope Sixtus IV, who ordered its reconstruction between 1473 and 1481. It owes its fame above all to Michelangelo's frescoes: he painted the vault between 1508 and 1512 and later The Last Judgment on the altar wall. The side walls also hold works by Cosimo Rosselli, Luca Signorelli and Piero di Cosimo, among others. Today it is the setting for papal conclaves, where cardinals elect a new pope.
