Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

Bradford, United Kingdom · 5 works · 5 painters

Cartwright Hall is the civic art gallery of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England, about a mile from the city centre in the Manningham district. Built on the site of the former Manningham Hall with a gift of £40,000 from Samuel Lister, it takes its name from Edmund Cartwright. It opened in 1904 with works borrowed from other galleries and private collections, and only later could it buy a permanent collection of Victorian and Edwardian art, paid for with money raised by the 1904 Bradford Exhibition. Its building is often linked to "Bradford Baroque". The collection spans Old Masters to twentieth-century British painting and sculpture. Among its best-known paintings are An Egyptian Feast by Edwin Long, The Bitter Draught of Slavery by Ernest Normand, The Cloud by Arthur Hacker, Fitting Out, Mousehole Harbour by Stanhope Forbes, and The Strand by Night by Christopher R. W. Nevinson.
