Museum Georg Schäfer

Schweinfurt, Germany · 8 works · 4 painters

The Museum Georg Schäfer stands in Schweinfurt, Bavaria, Germany, beside the city hall, and opened to the public in 2000. It grew out of the private collection of the German industrialist Georg Schäfer, assembled mainly from the 1950s onward with nineteenth-century paintings by artists from German-speaking countries, many of them overlooked by the major regional centres. Its holdings of about 950 paintings include the world's most comprehensive set of works by Carl Spitzweg, whose The Cactus Enthusiast and The Sorcerer are among the pictures on the web. Other artists represented include Caspar David Friedrich, with The Cathedral, and Franz Pforr, with Sulamith and Mary. The museum has also had to examine the ownership history of some works after restitution claims linked to Nazi-era looting.
