Pinacoteca Ambrosiana
Milan, Italy · 15 works · 13 painters
The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is a museum in Milan, Italy, closely tied to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana beside it. Cardinal Federico Borromeo founded it in 1618 around his own collection of roughly 250 works, intended to give free cultural training to talented people. An academy of painting and sculpture was soon attached to it, and Giovanni Battista Crespi became its first director. Among the highlights are Leonardo da Vinci's Portrait of a Musician, Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit and Botticelli's Madonna of the Pavilion, while Bramantino, with three paintings, is the most represented artist online. Later bequests enlarged the holdings, and the gallery was renovated in several phases, most recently between 1990 and 1997.
