Wilton House

Wilton, United Kingdom · 3 works · 2 painters

Wilton House is an English country house in the town of Wilton, near Salisbury, in Wiltshire. For four centuries it served as the country seat of the Earls of Pembroke. The site began with a monastery founded around 871, which grew into a wealthy abbey until Henry VIII dissolved it; the king then granted the lands to William Herbert, first Earl of Pembroke. Its old-master paintings include works by Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck, notably the large family portrait of the 4th Earl. Among the paintings listed on this site are Cesare da Sesto's Leda and the Swan and Van Dyck's portrait of Elizabeth Brydges, Countess Castlehaven.
