This oil-on-panel painting by Adam Willaerts, dated around 1615, alludes to the naval battle of Gibraltar on 25 April 1607, fought during the Eighty Years' War. Rather than offering a detailed account of the combat, the work functions as an allegory: in the foreground, a Dutch sailor and a Spaniard grapple over a wooden bar, while an Englishman and a Venetian watch the scene as onlookers. This arrangement suggests a reading of the clash in terms of maritime rivalry between powers, with observers who stand outside the conflict presenting it as a matter of wider European concern. In the background, the sea and the Rock frame the naval engagement, which is handled in general terms rather than as a focus of attention. The small panel was painted, according to the sources, in Utrecht, in a period placed between 1615 and 1630, and is now held by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Its interest lies mainly in how a specific military event becomes a symbolic composition about naval power and Dutch identity during the war.
