Dance in the City is an 1883 oil on canvas in which Pierre-Auguste Renoir took up the theme of dancing in an urban setting. The couple appears in the foreground, at life size, and the composition is anchored by the female figure, dressed in the Parisian fashion of the day. Her pose and bearing convey a sense of elegance and poise, while the male dancer is rendered almost as a silhouette, with far less detail, so that attention falls on the young woman and on the shared movement between the two.

The painting was not conceived on its own. It is paired with Dance in the Country, also from 1883, and both works show two figures dancing in different places, one city and one countryside. That contrast invites viewers to read the pair as a meditation on two ways of spending leisure and socialising in late nineteenth-century France.

Their posture suggests that they are waltzing, a dance that allowed partners to hold each other closely, and the painting makes the intimacy between them a central feature. The models were Suzanne Valadon, who posed for the woman, and Paul Auguste Lhôte, who posed for the man. Valadon was pregnant at the time, a detail usually linked to her son, the future painter Maurice Utrillo, although the canvas itself does not show this.

The work is held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and is one of the most recognisable pieces from the period in which Renoir explored dance, blending the realism of an everyday scene with the soft, luminous colour typical of his style.
