The Breakfast
Juan Gris, 1915

The Breakfast is a cubist still life that Juan Gris painted in October 1915. It shows a coffee grinder, a coffee pot and a fruit bowl, everyday objects of the breakfast table that the painter reduces to simple geometric forms. Rather than showing them from a single viewpoint, the picture breaks them apart and reassembles them into overlapping planes, so the viewer sees several sides of each object at once. The surface combines oil and charcoal, a technique that leaves visible marks and emphasizes the drawing beneath the paint. Gris was one of the artists who pushed cubism toward a clearer, more orderly construction, and this work illustrates his interest in organizing ordinary subjects through geometry. Today it belongs to the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, where it is displayed alongside other works of the avant-garde.
