Italian Osteria Scene, Girl welcoming a Person entering
Wilhelm Marstrand, 1847

Painted by Wilhelm Marstrand in 1847, during his second stay in Italy (1845 to 1849), the work shows the interior of an osteria where two young women and their mother, asleep at the table, share the room with a newcomer. One of the girls raises her glass and meets the gaze of the arriving visitor, welcoming them, while her sister, seen from behind, turns her head over her shoulder to see who is entering and, at the same time, looks out toward the viewer. Both wear corset straps slipping from their shoulders, a subtle detail that gives the everyday scene a touch of sensuality. The painting later became a direct source of inspiration: Carl Bloch drew on it for his In a Roman Osteria (1866), and Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann also painted an osteria scene with this work in mind. After passing through the collection of Jacob Scavenius, it was bought at the 1894 sale of his estate by Carl Jacobsen, who added it to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek collection.
