Flowers in a Vase
Jan Brueghel the Elder, 1650

This panel shows a bouquet of flowers arranged in a vase, belonging to the genre of flower painting, which flourished in Antwerp during the seventeenth century. It is usually attributed to Jan Brueghel the Elder, although some scholars have argued that it may be a collaboration between him and his son, Jan Brueghel the Younger. It was probably painted around 1620, before the son travelled to Italy, which sits uneasily with the date of 1650 given in its record, so that the later date should be treated with caution. The work is held by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Rather than telling a story, the picture focuses on the flowers themselves: viewers can linger over the variety of forms and colours in the bouquet, the way the arrangement is composed within the vase, and the careful handling of detail typical of the genre at the time.
