Madame Jacques-Louis-Étienne Reizet (Colette-Désirée-Thérèse Godefroy, 1782–1850)
Anne-Louis Girodet, 1823

This 1823 portrait shows Colette-Désirée-Thérèse Godefroy (1782–1850), wife of Jacques de Reiset, a French government official of the Restoration era, and mother of Frédéric Reiset, an art collector who later worked as curator at the Louvre. Girodet, a pupil of Jacques-Louis David, blends his mentor's Neoclassical restraint with an interest in Florentine Renaissance art. The sitter first wanted a full-length image, but the painter convinced her that a half-length would work better, and she chose a velvet dress. It is among the last portraits Girodet produced before his death the following year. It was shown at the Salon of 1824 in Paris and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
