August Querfurt
1696–1761 · Austrian painter of battle and military scenes
August Querfurt (Wolfenbüttel, 1696 – Vienna, 1761) was a painter of German birth who worked in the Austrian sphere and is known mainly for scenes of soldiers and battles. He is usually regarded as an follower of other models rather than a highly original artist.
He received his first instruction from his father, Tobias Querfurt, a landscape and animal painter. He later trained under Rugendas in Augsburg. His pictures combine encampments, battles, cavalry skirmishes and hunting subjects, and show the influence of Bourguignon, Parrocel and Van der Meulen, though he most often sought to model his style on Wouwerman.
He died in Vienna in 1761. The Belvedere Museum holds two of his hunting scenes, and the Augsburg Gallery has four hunting pictures and a battle. Other works are in Berlin, Dresden, Stuttgart and Bratislava. His legacy rests largely in these collections, which document the military and hunting painting of the period.
