The Camposanto Monumentale, or Monumental Cemetery, is a historic building in Pisa, Italy, on the north side of the Piazza dei Miracoli beside the cathedral. The square has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Its name comes from a tradition that it was built around a load of earth brought from the Holy Land. Today it is a Gothic cloister with arcades, where most graves lie beneath the covered walkways. It is best known for its frescoes, painted between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Among them, the cycle attributed to Buonamico Buffalmacco includes Last Judgement and Hell, Triumph of Death and Thebaid.
