Wawel Castle

Kraków, Poland · 6 works · 6 painters

Wawel Castle stands on the hill of the same name in Kraków, Poland. For centuries it was the residence of the Polish kings and a symbol of the state, and today it houses one of the country's leading art museums, founded in 1930. Its painting collections include a notable group of Italian Renaissance works, among them Jupiter, Mercury and Virtue by Dosso Dossi, one of the most valuable pictures in the castle. Other painters represented on the website include Lucas Cranach the Elder, with Christ Blessing the Children, and Gabriël Metsu, with The Laundress. Alongside painting, the museum holds tapestries, goldsmiths' work, weapons and textiles.
