MuMa Museum of modern art André Malraux
Le Havre, France · 65 works · 22 painters
The André Malraux Museum of Fine Arts stands in Le Havre, a port city in northern France, at the entrance to the harbour. It takes its name from the French writer André Malraux, who, while serving as Minister of Culture, made it one of his priorities. Designed in the early 1960s by the architects Lagneau and Audigier, its defining feature was the transparency and flexibility of its structure. It was restructured and renovated in 1998 by Beaudouin.
The collection reinforces Le Havre's reputation as a city of art and history. Its roughly 2,000 works span from the late Middle Ages to the twentieth century and include painting, sculpture and other forms. The museum is particularly known for its Impressionist holdings, with works by Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Raoul Dufy. Among the painters most represented in the online selection, Eugène Boudin appears with Entrance of the Harbour of Trouville, and Camille Pissarro with several views, including L'anse des pilotes au Havre. Haute mer. Après-midi. Soleil. Othon Friesz appears with Le Havre, Bassin du Roy, and Albert Marquet is also present, alongside Gustave Courbet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Fantin-Latour.
In 2004 the museum received a major donation from the daughter of a Le Havre collector: 205 Impressionist and Fauvist works, including pieces by Eugène Delacroix, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro and Henri Matisse.
