El Greco Museum
Toledo, Spain · 17 works · 2 painters
The El Greco Museum is a house-museum in Toledo, Spain, devoted to the painter Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, who was born in Crete but produced most of his work in this Castilian city. Opened in 1910 to gather as many of his paintings as possible, it occupies a building that partly recreates the house where the painter worked. Its collection holds about twenty canvases by him, including the Apostles series, regarded as the finest surviving set, and View and Plan of Toledo, probably the museum's most significant piece. It also displays works by Luis Tristán, El Greco's best-known pupil, and by other Spanish artists such as Juan Bautista del Mazo and Joaquín Sorolla.
