Royal Palace of Amsterdam

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam, known in Dutch as Koninklijk Paleis, stands on the west side of Dam Square in the city centre, beside the Nieuwe Kerk. It was built as the town hall during the Dutch Golden Age, with work led by Jacob van Campen and Daniël Stalpaert beginning in 1648 and the building opening in 1655. Its classicist style suits that civic purpose. It later became a royal residence and today is one of the palaces placed at the monarch's disposal by law. Its interiors hold history and allegory paintings by artists such as Jacob Jordaens, Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol, reflecting the decorative programme of the period.
