Polenovo is the former estate and house museum of the painter Vasily Polenov, set beside the Oka River in the Zaokski district of Tula Oblast, Russia. Polenov bought the property in 1891 and designed the three-storey building, which was completed in 1892. After his death in 1927, the estate passed with all its collections and possessions to the state. The house museum was founded in 1939, renamed the V.D. Polenov Estate Museum in 1950, and in 1983 it became both an art historical site and a nature reserve museum.
As far as painting goes, the holdings at Polenovo revolve around the figure of their owner. The website lists 28 paintings in this section: 27 by Vasily Polenov and one by Ivan Shishkin. Among the titles identified is Golden Autumn by Polenov, while the Shishkin work is Pine Forest. The remaining paintings have no recorded title in the entry, so their identification is still pending. This concentration on a single author reflects the personal character of the collection rather than a broad overview of Russian painting.
The estate thus preserves the link between a domestic space and the artistic career of the person who lived there, and serves as a place to discover Polenov's creative surroundings alongside the Oka landscape.
