Moor huts in the Dachau moss
Franz Marc, 1902

A small wooden hut stands at the center of this composition, surrounded by a cluster of trees in a marshy landscape near Dachau. The lower half of the canvas shows the moorland ground, while the upper half is taken up by a cloudy sky. The painting is built on dark browns and muted greens, which the blue of the sky and the ochre patches in the foreground set off. Marc made it in 1902, while training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he received a thorough grounding in the nineteenth-century style of painting. As a result, the picture belongs fully to the tradition of the Munich School and shows none of the newer currents of its day. It matters because it is among the earliest known paintings by the artist. Details such as the individual leaves of the trees are rendered with fine, meticulous brushwork, revealing a young painter still searching for a language of his own.
