Chicos en la playa
Joaquín Sorolla, 1909

Boys on the Beach is an oil on canvas from 1909 in which Joaquín Sorolla painted three naked boys lying on the damp sand at the water's edge, with the clear waters of the Mediterranean behind them. The everyday scene shows the children in different postures: a fair-skinned, blond boy, perhaps the youngest, props himself up on one elbow and looks towards his companions, who are darker-skinned and whose bodies sink partly into the sand. Sorolla renders the blond boy with greater precision, his feet, legs, buttocks and back well defined, while the other two dissolve into the moisture of the beach, a contrast that heightens the sense of light and atmosphere. Young bathers on the shore recur throughout the painter's output, to the point that they can be regarded as a theme specific to his work. The painting is held in the Museo del Prado.
